conversation #4 Group D

Macbeth's reaction to Lady Macbeth's suicide in Act 5 scene 5, the famous "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" speech (p.179-180) is filled with some of the bleakest reflections on life in any work of literature.  What, exactly, is Macbeth saying here?  Why is he saying it?  How does it suggest the way that this powerful protagonist has fallen?

  3. When Macbeth first hears the news that his wife has died, his response was she would have died sometime eventually in her future. I believe Macbeth has completely lost all of his emotion in this speech because that is a very strange comment to say right after his loved one died. Macbeth then goes on about a whole speech about how depressing life is, where he calls life a walking shadow which on the side note says an image without substance, and also calls it a poor player or actor that acts on the stage, but when he leaves is never heard again, life signifies nothing. I believe Macbeth is saying this because everything is turning against him which is making him depressed. For example, his wife died, and people are coming after him to kill him, including old friends, so he knows his life might be coming to end very soon which is why he reject's the meaning of life.

    1. I agree. I think Macbeth has realized that he has nothing to live for anymore. Macbeth has nothing to look forward to and he has nothing left in his life that matters but his title as King. However, Macbeth knows that even his title doesn't even mean much because all his subjects have fled and turned against him. therefore Macbeth has lost all of his emotions.

  5. During this speech Macbeth repeatedly mentions the idea that everyone will die soon and that life is pointless. He says that life is just for fools who live through everyday, and each day get they closer to their deaths. He concludes his speech by saying, "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". In this grim statement, Macbeth concludes that he sees no importance in life or death. This suggests that once noble and valient Macbeth has fallen into despair and has lost all his original values because Macbeth sees no purpose in life for himself or anyone. I believe Macbeth says this because he believes he has nothing to live for at this point. His wife is dead, he is the king of few subjects that have no faith in him, and he has killed so many people that he is going crazy. Macbeth believes all he has to live for anymore is the day of this death.

  6. Macbeth during this scene points out that eventually everyone will die and that there is no point in living. He said that life was for fools. He said that he sees no good in life or death, and that everyday people are one step closer to their death. Macbeth went from being a brave and courageous warrior to seeing no point in life in him and all those around him. Macbeth says this quote because he feels as if all good in his life disappeared. He says that the only day that he sees a point in living is the day he dies.

  7. I think during this speech, Macbeth is saying that eventually his wife would have died and days of life keep going by . life is fake and plays tricks on your head and life is a story for idiots who are loud and disturbed with no meaning whatsoever all in all in Macbeth's perspective life sucks. I think he is saying it because he feels that Lady Macbeth should have gotten what was coming for her from all these murders. It shows that Macbeth has not truly lived yet and as Eric said Macbeth has not lived until he has died.

  9. No, I think he is saying this because he is emotionally depressed because of all the negative things that have happened during his time as king, which is why I believe he thinks life is meaningless. Lady Macbeth did not actually do the murders, but it was her idea for Duncan's murder and not anyone else's, and Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had a great relationship with one another.
