conversation #5 Group C

Macbeth's reaction to Lady Macbeth's suicide in Act 5 scene 5, the famous "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" speech (p.179-180) is filled with some of the bleakest reflections on life in any work of literature.  What, exactly, is Macbeth saying here?  Why is he saying it?  How does it suggest the way that this powerful protagonist has fallen?

  1. The play has gone in a full cycle because Scotland has been brought back to order. During the time that Duncan was king, he was heavily praised, and people were generally happy in Scotland. After the murder of king Duncan, Macbeth brought chaos to Scotland by killing off thanes, and acting cynical. People began to lose faith in him when they witnessed his hallucinations of Banquo. They began to question if Macbeth was really as strong as they had originally thought. The killing of Macduff’s family was a final indicator that Macbeth wasn’t to be trusted, and needed to be replaced. Finally, after he is beheaded, Malcolm reclaims Scotland which was rightfully his and restores it to how it was before Macbeth’s tyranny. Along with physical indications that mark Macbeth was an evil ruler, the weather also follows the wellbeing of Scotland. As Macbeth becomes more powerful, the weather seems to worsen opposed to when Duncan was king and then Malcolm. Do you think that Malcolm will be as trusted and loved as king Duncan was?

    1. Yes I think Malcolm will be as trusted and loved as king Duncan was for two reasons. First Malcolm is Duncan’s son and will probably act similar to his father, who was Malcolm’s role model for his whole life. Second, Duncan originally made Malcolm the Prince of Cumberland, showing that he trusts Malcolm to rule Scotland.

    2. I agree that Malcolm will be a great and respected king. I also think it is important for the citizens to remember that MAlcolm is the only heir to the throne and deserves it.

  2. The play goes from the country being in order to chaos to order because of the chain of being. Duncan is the original king. Everything is fine in Scotland when he is the king. Then Macbeth goes against the chain of being by killing someone who is higher on the chain than he is. This creates chaos throughout the country. At the end of the play Macbeth is killed. Once the man who disrupted the chain of being is dead everything goes back to order. Malcolm is named king, as he would have been if it wasn’t for Macbeth. Malcolm gaining power is a true sign of the chain of being being restored because if Macbeth had not killed Duncan, Malcolm would have been named king following his father.

  3. The play starts with Duncan, Macbeth, and Banquo defeating the rebel thanes trying to overthrow Duncan, keeping the same king in power and giving order to Scotland. Then, Macbeth, a thane, disrupts the Chain of Being and murders Duncan to become king. This causes chaos in Scotland, both among the people and in the weather. Finally, Macbeth is murdered, and Malcolm, the son of Duncan, also the Prince of Cumberland while Duncan was alive, becomes King and fixes the Chain of Being, giving order back to Scotland.
