Conversation #5 Group A

The play ends with Malcolm's speech in which he invites everyone (who is still alive) "to see us crowned at Scone."  In what specific ways does this speech bring the play full circle from order to chaos to order?  How in this Shakespearean tragedy do we now see a world that was broken made whole again?

  1. When Malcolm becomes king the world seems to be exactly the way it should be. Malcolm is the son of Duncan, and therefore he was always supposed to be king once Duncan died. When Macbeth was crowned king it is almost as if he threw off the balance of nature. Animals were behaving strangely, no one was happy and people were dying. Once Malcolm becomes king, it is clear that he will restore order in the kingdom and make the people happy again. The people know that Malcolm was meant to be king so now that he is king they know things will go back to the way they are supposed to be.

  2. Malcolm's speech brings the play from order to chaos to order because at first when Duncan was king, people were happy and nature reflected that. When Macbeth murdered Duncan for the opportunity to become king, everything went wrong, but Malcolm being king will make everything like the way it was when Duncan was in rule. As Duncan's son, Malcolm is fulfilling his duty to be king and he has the divine right to rule. Malcolm's family has a history of being kings, so they have been 'chosen by God' which is why nature was reacting in a violent way when Macbeth took power.

  3. I agree with both Hannah Lewis and Hannah Glickenhaus because when Macbeth was king, there were multiple storms, representing chaos and destruction. When Macbeth was the thane of Cawdor, a lot of the scenes took place throughout the night, which is known to represent evil or darkness. Once Malcolm invited everyone to Scone, order was restored since he is Duncan’s son. Since Malcolm is from royal blood, he has been chosen by God to rule which is usually viewed as the good side in stories. We now see a world that was broken made whole again because the rightful leader, Malcolm, is now king and will lead Scotland towards a brighter future.

  6. Pathetic Fallacy, as my fellow bloggers have pointed out, play a big role in representing the chaos that took over as Macbeth took power. When Duncan was murdered, it was a tragic event, which left many people suspicious and devastated. Under Macbeth's rule, many were murdered in cold blood, with the single purpose of maintaining the throne. Whereas Macbeth never seemed to have been granted public support, in fact, his death brought cheers and hope, Malcolm is eagerly welcomed and accepted as the new king. I think it is also very important to note that Macbeth disrupted the Chain of Being, thereby bringing chaos, and Malcolm would restore it, which would be doing good by God and bringing peace to Scotland.
